Tumblah!!!

So I have not posted on my blog in almost forever, Oh my god! How embarrassing! Plainly due to laziness and me working on other projects, including my tumblr account which can be found on this link.

http://iheartflim.tumblr.com

This is where I am posting most of my photos shot on film, I find it is much more simple than posting on here. I say this because, every time I upload photos here, I have to go through the code and add a bit more code to display the photos in lightbox. It's definately an arduous task that ensures I stay well away from my blog because of the inevitable work at hand.

Thus, tumblr has made my life that much simpler and I can smash out photos on this website like crazy, if it doesn't crash which used to happen frequently, but not so much lately, a blessing.

So once again, I apologise that I have not updated this blog in so long, hopefully it won't be crazy long once again before any other content pops up in here, depends how pre-occupied I am.

Till next time my fellow human beings!

Oh and check out my tumblr!

The Holiday Film

So recently I took the Leica out to finally finish a roll of film I've had in it for months! I decided that I should test my street photography skills with film. There were multiple challenges here! There's so many factors involved with film photography compared to digital, most being time. Normally with digital I could think more about composition and the right moment because I could use either aperture priority or shutter priority and let the camera figure the rest for me instantly. Film is so much more challenging and I love it! Firstly, it stops me from being lazy, getting a sharp and properly exposed image is 10 times more rewarding when seen on a film strip. The ability to use your mind to work out exposure, to compose artistically and to focus precisely, if all done together, makes the camera that much more an extension of your eye. I think its beautiful because of that. The ability to work on your manual photography and also capturing moments is a challenge but will help you to become a better photographer. It will be second nature to you to see something visually interesting and know exactly what to do to capture it and in turn, share with the world.

I had my photos developed and I was happy to see that my film roll was consistantly exposed properly. This made me very happy to know that my skills have definately improved. I was also fascinated with the images I took. They looked nice! Well to my eye, almost similar to shots I would take digitally, which means I am fine tuning my craft and that I am becoming more capable of using any medium and have the competency to apply my vision using it, which is great!

Here are a few photos from the roll that has been sitting in the Leica for months! I'm so happy to share these, I really love the photos the Leica M3 produces, a combination of the lens and camera and my eye creates a new world to my photography, its a world that I'm happy to be immersed in and I hope to continue delving down this path and developing my art and developing my skills. Till next time friends!

Leica M3! I choose you!

Im sticking to my guns! I said it and I will damn right stick by it and write posts on my holidays! Shows character doesn't it? Well I think so, a person who is determined to ensure they practice what they preach, this is a person to be trusted, unless their life goal was actually to be your arch enemy then no, I wouldn't trust them, but, you get the point.

Ok, I have a 36 exposure Fujifilm 160NC roll lingering in the depths of my Leica M3 for the past month. Film is just so much more important to me. Im assuming this is because, money does not at all grow off trees, and hardly can I scrape the barrel that is my bank account to shell out for luxuries that is what they call, film. This is probably why I'm so afraid to use it, well maybe not afraid, but to put it in lame mans terms, scroogeish? I want to make sure each frame is worth that spot on the film, if not, then whats the point, what a waste. I wish I could just have an endless supply of film but hey, we don't have a genie that could make that happen, and even if we had a genie, I'm sure we would ask for greater things, the materialistic driven type of people we are, we love our things.

I have taken it upon myself as a task tomorrow, it is now 11:03pm and I am writing this, yes, to finish this roll and have it developed at a 1 hour photo place and have a set of printed photos by night to scan in at home and post here. Im actually quite excited about this and it has been on my mind for a while, thinking of it gives me chills to see photos that I have previously taken. I have no idea what's on there! Simply because my memory fills up faster than an old 8 megabyte SD card. Nonetheless, a definate treat to see in the end!

I've seriously had the Leica sitting on the coffee table doing nothing, I did take a photo yesterday though of the road so hey! My memory has slightly come back! But it will be somewhat of an achievement to finish another roll. I have practically only finished 2 rolls from shoot all the way to develop and print. The first roll sadly was destroyed because my lack of knowledge and mechanics of a 35mm camera assuming it somehow works just like a medium format and collects straight onto the other spool. Silly me, but it was an invaluable lesson that I will never forget, the memories of my trip to the Philippines however recorded on that film are most certainly, bitterly, sadly, gone.

This talk has gradually leaned towards my overall topic. My new found utter fascination with film and the process involved. I find it deeply rewarding especially with the Leica to take photo's using full manual settings, full manual focus, full manual developing tied together with patience. This is the natural, real and fundamental process of photography that I believe everyone should experience if you are becoming a photographer, not just digital. Digital photography teaches you how to chimp, notice exposure issues and fix them by twiddling some dials till it looks right. What happened to getting it right straight away? This is the best feeling to know that you got it right, its like an award every time you look at your photos, well this is how I believe, I suppose this is my true passion to the art.

This leads to my other agenda, art. Apart from all the technical aspects, you still need to create an interesting image, and this ofcourse comes from creativity, knowledge of visual concepts, talent and even some luck. Some great images may not be technically sound but still look amazing! This is the art! Imagine having both creativity and the fundamentals of photography to portray these crazy and fantastic ideas you have in your gifted little head. That makes a photographer in my opinion, a person who can develop not a photo, but a vision.

I believe I know a sufficient amount on the technical aspects of photography, but I think my creativity could be lacking. I tend to stick to what I know Im good at, not leaving my comfort zone and generally producing ok images, but nothing great, however just like everyone else, we are our own harshest critic. I want to change this. How could I develop my creativity? I stumbled across some magazines, and saw some photos that were beautiful, not tack sharp in focus and had lens flare that took up almost the entire image, but the photograph still looked beautiful. I found out this photo was taken with a Holga. I was astonished! A cheap plastic camera developed such a photo that was credited by a magazine and shown for the world to see. This was inspiring. So I read up on Holga's. I've seen them but always looked the other way, mainly because a lot of my friends had them and I didnt want to fall into the trend. But just now, have I given in to the trend. I just bought a Holga 135BC which I will expect next week.

The reason? I suppose I am placing some faith in this aparatus to explore my creativity. There are hardly any features on this camera, it is simple, it is film and all I mainly have to do is find things I want to take a photo of and snap it. Beautiful! I get the best of both worlds, an exploration of creativity and I get to use film!

I think this will be a fun and adventurous task for me that will possibly open up a new world to my photography. Im excited and its now late, so I think its time for some sleep. Tomorrow, my Leica is going to finish another roll. I am deeply thrilled and can't wait to see the results. Till then friends, Keep Snapping!

My fellow QUTopians, we meet once again

To my fellow readers, I apologize at the lack of content these past couple of months. I have been really slack and I sincerely do apologize. Let's just say I have been quite busy with intensive photographic assignments that have kept me up till way early in the mornings amoungst a mass amount of youtube and facebook procrastination. Needless to say, who could blame me, in such a digital society that we now live in, I'd find this highly interesting to believe I am the only heavy consumer of such social media. Anyways... :)

It was that time of the semester where I ventured into the land of QUTopia. If you are not familiar with what this is, it is a market simulation for QUT students to test out marketing strategies to improve sales in whichever product they decide to provide to the customer, usually decided upon by the team throughout the semester. I've been the photographer for this event for the past 2 semesters and I must say, it is one event that I continually look forward to photographing. This semester I believe was quite different to other semesters, and not just because of date wise you smarty pants. Mainly in the fact that the stalls were more unique and covered a wider range of products and services. A lot more stalls this time around were quite interactive and competitive with the incentive to win bigger prizes. Such stalls were the beer pong stalls, and also the video game and Guitar Hero stalls. Other than those, there were masseuses and fun photography services (likeIt QUTopia) which I happened to win 2 free movie tickets from. Yes! Time to go see some sweet movies!

These stalls as a whole brought an amazing atmosphere that provided fun and laughter throughout, although possibly stressful for the students, was entertaining for the customers. Apart from the interactive services, we can not forget the other stalls, the consumables. The things we look around QUTopia for and take home as memorabilia or to devour on the spot. Yum!

As usual, I was not disappointed here either, there were plenty of things to buy! The chocolate fondue was to die for! I also thought the pen holders shaped like humans were very creative and I had to buy one just for the fact that it was so unique. Another item I had to buy was from the birdcage stall as the items on sale were beautiful! Hand crafted and generally were an item most likely difficult to find anywhere else.

Overall, I had a terrific experience once again covering the event, it was fun as always and as long as Im taking photos, it helps me to develop my creative eye, attention to detail and increasing my instinct to capturing those decisive moments that really seize the essence of the event. Here are a select amount of photos from the event. Till next time friends!!!

No does NOT mean Yes: Slutwalk Brisbane

So today was the Slutwalk and I was so close to not attending this event, but luckily I made it and just in time! "SlutWalk has become a worldwide movement, working to challenge mindsets and stereotypes of victim-blaming and slut-shaming" - Slutwalk

The movement founded in Toronto was established after a police officer labeled women and people most at risk of being sexually assaulted as sluts. This ofcourse is wrong and the Slutwalk movement is the best response to such an unprofessional use of power by police.

We are entitled to dress the way we want to. This is self expression, this is life, this is freedom. In no way does this mean/suggest that you want to be sexually assaulted. I thought people were more literal these days, the only way a person dresses that could suggest they are "asking for it" is if they were holding a sign and it was printed all over their clothing. Ever seen that? I don't think so.

I thought this was a great event, just to see everyone feel so strong about this cause was empowering and encouraging. It shows that people do care about an issue that must be addressed. We do live in a free society, clothing is a form of our own self expression and who is to place us in these segmented groups or stereotypes, who is to disregard our rights and say that being sexually assaulted is our fault. To know that an official has labeled people as sluts is an outrage and thus, here stands the Slutwalk movement, here to correct the politically uncorrect.

Here are a select few photos from the event, to see the rest please go to my facebook page ;)

Till next time my friends.
