Activity Portrait

I seem to have a fascination with photographing people as they go on their daily lives, whether it be working or enjoying their leisurely activities. As an example above is a photo of my dad working on a new deer head trophy. My dad hunts as one of his ambitions in life, every now and again he will go to the country to hunt. Sometimes he comes back with something and sometimes he doesnt. But that is the spirit of the hunter, not losing hope, the courage to carry on. Thats how the provider of a family is supposed to be, he supports and makes sure everyone is safe.

In this photo he is almost finished placing the entire skin over the mould. I dont know how taxidermist's could do this all the time, but my dad did, and he taught himself. I guess I have inherited the gene to teach myself things from him, as most things that I have wanted to know, I have taught myself, like art, photography, computers, and all of this now is reinforced by schooling.

Back to the topic, so as I mentioned, my fascination with people at work has drawn me to this direction of taking this photo of my dad. Obviously lucky about the timing, who knows if he would bag another deer. I shot this in natural light which was actually very unnatural as a traditional 60 watt light bulb was dangling over our heads. But nonetheless, this is my photo, I had burnt out most of the surroundings as I aimed to place focus mainly on my dad and what he was doing.

I shot this photo at 1/25th of a second at f4.5 ISO 1000!! Woah! Yes it was a little noisy :) But with the lens I was using there was no way to stop down any lower, and my hands arent the best at hand holding 1 second shutter speeds nor was it possible to have my dad hold a pose while I pull out my tripod just to take the photo. Moments last forever, but capturing it can be gone in an instant.
