Selective colour I think not.

So today I was walking around the city taking photos as I do. Today was unusually colder, with winter creeping up I wasn't expecting it so soon. But here it is nonetheless and my eyes have opened to the changes that are occurring. The morning light is coming later, the night is coming earlier, thus, less time to take day photos. However, this does not deter me from going out and seizing any opportunity I have to pull out my camera and snap up. What I have noticed today is the light seemed so much more intense yet the heat was not there, this was a good thing. It almost feels like I can walk around all day without sweat dripping from my back as I stand around looking for interesting subjects and situations. In other words, the photographers dream, well...my dream :) It reminds me of my time in Christchurch, New Zealand. Waking up to -4 degrees mornings with the day not going any higher than 10 degrees. I could walk around all day in that weather and continually take photos. I suppose the weather inspires me, almost encourages me to move on and find that special shot. Even if I didn't, I had a beautiful walk, no fatigue and the joy of just being out in a beautiful place was amazing. Hmm, I suppose I'm feeling a little nostalgic now that the weather is becoming similar.

Today I took an interesting photo. I walk by this place on the Queen Street Mall almost every day. Around 2pm this intense light reflected off the ground and shined straight in my face as I walked closer and closer to it. It was odd, well, I had never noticed it before after all the times I have walked by, this time it really struck me as interesting. So I decided to take a photo of it. What I aimed to do was frame a subject within the middle and let the light and background composition fall into place. I knew I only had one chance to get the photo right. I saw a subject walk by and she just happened to walk where I wanted her to be for the composition. I took the photo, Aperture priority set to f/1.8 shutter speed was handled accordingly with a -2/3 stop exposure compensation. I tend to do this to reduce blown highlights. The result was beautiful! When I got home to look at it closer, it was apparent there was this interesting colour effect happening. That's as best as I can explain it. The bottom half of the frame looked almost monochromatic and the top half, contained the majority of colour, with that interesting reflective highlight on the ground. It was cool! The composition also allowed for a somewhat vignetting effect drawing the eye to the subject in the middle which I think is pretty cool and ties this photo together. So yeah, I was really happy with the result and I hope to take more interesting photos soon. Till then, happy snapping!
